Grab-and-Go Breakfasts

By:   Light & Tasty Magazine

The benefits of breakfast are well-known . . .

. . . but the convenience of fast food is often too great for early-morning commuters to bypass.

If you have no choice but to order breakfast at a drive-thru, consider these pointers to help keep you on the road to good health.

  • Some fast-food chains offer yogurt and hot and cold cereals with fat-free milk. These make terrific a.m. options along with a cup of orange juice.
  • Pancakes are usually a safe bet. Pass on the butter and use a little syrup, jam or jelly instead.
  • Put the brakes on when it comes to meal deals that include side orders of sausage, bacon or hash browns, which are usually fried in fat. Instead, ask for an unbuttered English muffin, bagel or wheat toast to round out your meal.
  • Egg sandwiches often combine several sodium-rich foods such as breakfast sausage, cheese and biscuits. If you can't help but give in to one of these handheld items, consider one that features an unbuttered English muffin instead of a biscuit and Canadian bacon or ham instead of other breakfast meats. Or order a breakfast burrito that has a healthier veggie filling, and you'll be sure to start the day off light!
