Albany, New York

Quackenbush, Rennsalaer, Van Alstine, Genessee, and Knickerbocker. Good Dutch names inherited from Albany’s early history, which began in 1609 with the explorations of Captain Henry Hudson. A commercial hub since its settlement by fur trading Dutch merchants (long before the British arrived), Albany’s economic destiny was cemented when the Erie Canal opened in 1825 linking the Hudson River with points west. As the hub of New York State’s capitol district, the town is home to politicos, lawyers, and lobbyists, as well as “regular people.” Dining options reflect the same spectrum, ranging from the Miss Albany Diner with its classic diner décor and menu, to two downtown Albany favorites: Marche, serving a fresh, sophisticated, seasonal menu, and Jack’s Oyster House, established in 1913. Successive waves of immigrants mean there’s great Greek food, Italian, and Chinese in the area, too. Follow the locals when you want hearty, made-to-order sandwiches, soups, and decadent desserts, and head for Grandma’s Country Pies and Restaurant out on Central Avenue, or Peaches Café and Bountiful Bread in Stuyvesant Plaza.

Half and Halfs

Reviewed on Jul. 24, 2008 by PrincessJenna
Just pulled the first batch out of the oven. These are fabulous!! I used semisweet chips, CookinginFL's method of assembly and baked at 350 for 10 minutes. They taste great and are just too cute. Planning on making ice cream sandwiches with them, if I don't eat them all. The presentation factor and yumminess of two cookies in one was definitely worth the bit of extra time. My thanks for such a great recipe and to those who have been talking about it and posting photos of the cookies lately.

Great Green Salad

Reviewed on Jul. 18, 2008 by soapscrubs
I ommitted the avacado (didn't have any) and the almonds (personal preference), so I wasn't sure if it might be too plain because of that...but it was still fantastic! That dressing is great, and I'm not usually a huge feta cheese fan, but it went really well. Thanks for the recipe.

Lemon-Garlic Green Beans

Reviewed on Jul. 16, 2008 by soapscrubs
Very good. If you guys like the flavor of this recipe you should try "lemon garlic mushrooms" also on this site; what is it about lemon and garlic that goes so well with cooked vegetables?
